Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, known for its dunes, forests, and estates, is one of the most valuable areas in the Netherlands. To ensure the area's future resilience, the National Park is working on strengthening the dune ecosystem and ecological connections, as well as reinforcing social ties with the region and making the green area recognisable and accessible to visitors.

Together with its project partners, Smartland compiled a Landscape Biography and LESA (Landscape Ecological and Socio-cultural Analysis). We looked beyond the park's current boundaries, in line with the vision for National Parks 'New Style'.

The biography tells the story of the National Park and its surroundings through time in an accessible way, with a strong focus on the changing relationship between humans and the landscape. It covers the biotic and abiotic factors that shaped the green area into what it is today - from its origins, the functioning of the soil and water systems, and ecological richness, to human use such as habitation, mineral extraction, agriculture, and industry. The area's defense history and the development of recreation are also covered.

Smartland wrote several chapters, created the maps and illustrations, handled the text and image editing, and took care of the layout. 'Het landschap van Zuid-Kennemerland vertelt' was published in 2024 and has been available in the shop at the De Kennemerduinen Visitor Centre since. The Landscape Biography also serves as a basis for informed future decision-making regarding climate resilience and sustainable development, striking a balance between nature and culture.
