Den Helder is facing an increasing number of complex challenges regarding environmental space, accessibility and physical space for desired civil and military functions. Smartland created a vision on ecology and spatial quality in addition to ongoing projects, such as the dike reinforcement and maritime urban development. The ambition: from a grey backside to an appealing harbour front, for people and animals. The vision focuses on opportunities for nature inclusiveness, recreation and experience.
The design introduces robust interventions on two levels. At the landscape level, the connection between dunes, mudflats, harbour and city is restored, with space for dry dune nature, wet inner dune edges and brackish water zones.
At the design level, the Havendijk is given a new profile with salt greenery, urban balconies, views of the harbour and city, and innovative elements such as Reefy underwater structures with a dashboard on the quay and an image-defining pergola with greenery and nesting facilities. Vegetation is also cleverly woven into embankments, walls and even fences, while underwater structures create ecological value.
The intended impact of this vision is great: a harbour front that unites ecology and economy, improves recreation and contributes to the climate resilience of the city. The Havendijk will be a public-friendly link between city and sea, where biodiversity grows, visitors are amazed and the identity of the Wadden city becomes tangible. This vision forms the foundation for a coherent design in which sustainability, experience and safety go hand in hand.
