Stationspark in Heerhugowaard is developing into a (nature)inclusive, future-proof neighborhood where housing, healthcare, social interaction and livability come together. Kennemer Wonen is realizing 171 social rental homes within the project. In addition, Stationspark also includes owner-occupied homes and care homes, allowing different groups to live together in one neighborhood.
Smartland designed the public space and the rooftop gardens of the project, with the aim of actively encouraging interaction between residents. An important part of this is the collective polder rooftop garden on the roof of the parking garage, where residents are jointly responsible for maintenance. The design, inspired by the polder structure, with orthogonal lines and elongated planting strips, contributes to increasing biodiversity, the experience of greenery, social connection, and strong community building. The planting strips vary in substrate thickness, providing space for a varied planting plan – from low-maintenance sedum to lush nature roofs with grasses and flowers.
The shaded roof garden on the intermediate level invites stillness and a slowed-down experience. Planting was chosen that thrives without direct sunlight, featuring a rich array of green tones and a diversity of leaf shapes and textures.
In this way, Stationspark is growing into more than a residential project: a place where nature, living and social interaction are sustainably interconnected. The design is a response to the ambition of the municipality of Dijk en Waard to create a neighborhood where social housing, owner-occupied homes, care, and a nature-inclusive public space reinforce one another.
