Insect hotel
As part of the design of the Natuurinclusief Ereperk Eindhovense Veteranen, Smartland created a nature-inclusive element: an insect hotel. This design has since been replicated on various occasions, such as for the Glue Festival in Amsterdam, and there is a permanent installation at the Tuin van Bret in Amsterdam.
This insect hotel aims to maximise space and diversity to attract as many insect species as possible, while also serving as an aesthetically pleasing element that can be integrated into landscapes or planting areas, creating an enjoyable visual experience for people.
The insect hotel features a robust wooden base topped with corten steel, housing various 'hotel rooms'. Each compartment is tailored to meet the specific conditions required by different insect species. This includes varying shapes of openings, different orientations in relation to sunlight and prevailing wind directions, and diverse materials for furnishing the compartments (such as reeds and bamboo for bees, or tree bark for butterflies).
An attractive aspect of the corten steel top is its customizable feature, which allows the inclusion of logos from municipalities, organizations, or companies, or the image of the primary target insect species.
