Building Nature Through Solar
The climate is changing rapidly as a result of fossil CO2 emissions and biodiversity in rural areas has declined at a furious pace due to intensive and monocultural land use involving the use of chemicals. Smartland views the energy transition as an opportunity to simultaneously restore nature, soil quality and landscape coherence. Based on this conviction, we developed the Building Nature Through Solar (BNTS) principle: biodiverse solar parks that not only generate sustainab

Landscape framework Oosterwold
Oosterwold is a unique development area for housing, food production, and self-organisation. The organic development has generated great diversity but also has downsides: limited accessibility, a lack of collective public space, and problematic water management. For the next phase (fields I, N, and O), clients BPD and Gebiedsteam Oosterwold desire a stronger collective structure. This zone presents additional challenges: nuisance from the highway, wind turbines, and land subs

Water and soil as the basis for development
Within the framework of the National Strategy and Intergovernmental Implementation Agenda 2024-2025 for Water and Soil Guiding, the CRa organized a number of regional sessions for complex areas facing many challenges. One of these study areas is the Wieringermeerpolder. This region was chosen due to the interesting and complex interplay of history and landscape development, significance for food supply, large-scale developments and demands from industry, energy and data. Landscape Garden Nijemirdum
When the Vink family moved to Gaasterland in Friesland, their property consisted mainly of ryegrass. There was little connection with the green surroundings, the old landscape elements had disappeared, and they experienced waterlogging due to the boulder clay layer sealing the soil like a watertight lid. Their ambition: to transform the meadows into a biodiverse landscape garden. Smartland created a landscape design that invites life back onto the site and allowed implementat

Roof Gardens Stationspark Heerhugowaard

Kennemer Wonen is realizing 171 social rental homes within the project. In addition, Stationspark also includes owner-occupied homes and care homes, allowing different groups to live together in one neighborhood. Smartland designed the public space and the rooftop gardens of the project, with the aim of act

Green-blue framework North Holland
North Holland faces the challenge of restoring the balance between nature, water and human use of its landscapes and making them future-proof. The province boasts rich and diverse landscapes, yet many green and blue structures have become fragmented and do not function sufficiently as a cohesive system. At the same time, challenges regarding biodiversity, climate adaptation, water quality, and livability are increasing. Driven by this urgency, Smartland conducted design-based
